“Mommy, how much longer until my birthday?” my youngest sweetly asked from his assigned seat in the middle of the van. The big day was still a few months away, I assured him.
“Well,” he added, “You and Daddy need to talk about it because I don’t like late birthday presents.”
This child weighed ten pounds and five ounces at birth. That is a day I will not forget.
At a whopping four years of age, he has lots to offer when it comes to advice, answers to questions, and just your basic directions on what to do and when to do it. I’m confident having two older brothers has boosted his capabilities or at least aged him when it comes to his words. He has lived up to his nickname, “Walker Talker” with flying colors. One night he pleaded for help past bedtime because he just couldn’t stop talking long enough to go to sleep.
Walker often keeps a smile on our faces and may have added a few grays to mama’s hair. I refer to him as my rainbow baby as he was a joyous addition to our family after a tremendous loss. His name comes from the Bible verse “We walk by faith.” And we did just that as I carried him. And we will continue to do that as we raise him and his brothers.
And as much as our desire is to teach and train him, we have learned an awful lot from him.
Some of his advice, (i.e. “If you ever see a king cobra, step over it.”) may not prove as helpful as other encouragements he provides.
For months I have contemplated, questioned, and struggled with starting this blog. One day as I finished a project, Walker looked up at me, told me, “Good job, Mommy,” and asked when I was going to put things on email for others to read. While I know I won’t always have the right words or ideas to share with you here, I knew from his words that I needed to try.
So, from Walker’s words, a prompting on my heart, and countless prayers, here we go. Welcome to Life with the Lid Up!
